"Be careful what you wish for..."
Kricket Hollowell never fit in, running and making it on her own, she is counting down until her 18th birthday. On that day, she can finally be free, no longer on the run from social services. But one desperate night, one careless wish, she finds herself being hunted by two sets of men who seem to know more about her past that she herself. It turns out there was a reason all along as to why she never fit in, a gift from her mother that has been passed down to her, a gift so valuable, making her wanted by all...
Two very dangerous men, with two different motives. Kyon, from the Alameeda Brotherhood, seems far to at ease when it comes to delivering a lie with a smile. Trey, a general from Skye, a Rafe citizen, seems to be the only one she can trust. At least he has been upfront with his intentions, even if they mean that she would be paying for crimes. Torn between her mother and father's people, Kricket the product of her parent's illicit love affair seems to be the trigger to the impending war between Rafe and Alameeda. While the other other houses need to decide who to allay themselves with, for it is inevitable and it seems that Kricket's gifts can be most useful.
"Fortune favors the brave"
Trey and his most trusted men are belived to be the best of the best, so delivering a simple human female to the Reagent of Rafe should be easy now that they found her but they never anticipated for all that is Kricket. She has managed to surprise them and knock them off their feet; with her strength, charm and drive. And while Trey is driven by rules and orders, he can't help how protective and possessive he feels about Kricket. Even if she drives him mad. But under the stars when the walls are down, anything can happen and bloom.
"You trying to stop her heart, sir" Jax asks in a concerned tone, coming to me and checking me for injuries.
"No, she's stopping mine," Trey replies softly,
Finding herself in a dimension far from home, she knows she will survive this just like everything else in her life. But what will it costs her for the information she seeks, how far is she willing to go to get to know her parents...
I'm stone. Nothing touches me-nothing
But with men vying for her attention, with Kyon demanding her hand, the Regent playing with her as if she is a toy, and Trey the man that fills her heart and can easily break it...
"...your voice will give comfort when the night becomes its blackest," he replies. "And I'll protect that voice with my body, my mind, and my spirit . . . because without it, I'm alone in the dark."
Under Different Stars is a fantastic ya-fantasy read, I was pulled in immediately, invited to live through each moment with Kricket. Her strength is also her weakness and that is what makes her come to life. Trey is a duty bound man, but has the inner struggle between what he is supposed to do and what his heart is telling him. I love the butterfly in my tummy feels, experiencing their need and longing; the battle between heart and mind. At times I forget that Kricket is only eighteen, she was forced to grow up early in life which made her the woman she is today. At first I was scared that there would be a love-triangle between Trey, Kricket and Kyon, but Kyon proved to be an ass from the moment he opened his mouth.
This story has the fantastical element of a science fiction novel, the beginning and growth of a true love, loyalty, friendship and political games. It is told from Kricket's POV, and I wish at times I could get into Trey's head, only to see what he was thinking. I absolutely loved it and cannot wait to read what happens next for Kricket. Recommended for those who see the beauty in the stars and wonder of a world so different from here...
